Breast Enhancement – Breast Augmentation, Implants, Breast Lift, Reduction, and More – Santa Barbara

Breast Augmentation (Breast Implants)

For many women, small breasts can be an issue of self-consciousness and self-esteem. Smaller-breasted women often feel unfeminine and lack self-confidence in their presentation. Moreover, clothing at most stores is designed with medium to larger breasted women in mind, forcing women with smaller breasts to wear uncomfortable padded bras or to forgo fashionable clothing entirely. For women who want feminine curves, Dr. Mackenzie offers several breast augmentation procedures. We use FDA approved saline and silicone breast implants at our Santa Barbara office to enhance the curvature of the body.

Breast augmentation can make your body swimsuit ready for the Santa Barbara summer or just moderately enhance your curves and make you feel more comfortable and feminine. If you are interested in getting breast implants, you should contact our Santa Barbara office to schedule a complimentary consultation.

In consultation, you and Dr. Mackenzie will decide what extent for your breast implants would best suit both your body and your cosmetic goals, as well as choosing an incision location.

After breast augmentation surgery, patients will experience some pain, swelling, and bruising around the breasts. These symptoms will eventually fade. Some visible scarring is an inevitable result of breast enhancement. However, our Santa Barbara surgeon makes sure that scars are as inconspicuous as possible through surgical precision. Moreover, you and Dr. MacKenzie can choose one of several incision locations prior to breast augmentation surgery that will determine the position of scars. Placement options include the breast crease, the armpit, around or through the areola.

Working through the incision, Dr. Mackenzie will place the breast implants behind the breast tissue, usually behind the pectoral muscles. The incision and placement of breast implants is decided at our Santa Barbara office during consultation and will depend on your concerns, cosmetic goals, and your plastic surgeon’s opinion of which placement will best suit your lifestyle.

To ensure maximum comfort during your recovery, we routinely offer revolutionary pain pumps that can significantly reduce post-operative pain and the need for pain medication. The pumps consist of thin tubing that slips through the skin and safely administers pain medication directly to the surgical site. They are completely portable and discreet.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) offers a website with additional conditions set forth by the FDA related to patient education. It is the authoritative web site for both saline and silicone breast implants and offers objective and science-based information at www.breastimplantsafety.org.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Pregnancy, breast feeding, genetics, age, or other factors can cause breasts to sag, causing women to lose confidence in their appearance, making them feel older, even unfeminine. However, breast sagging can be eliminated by the breast lift procedure offered at our Santa Barbara plastic surgery practice. A breast lift rejuvenates sagging breasts, restoring their youthful, rounded appearance. A breast lift can also be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation in order for complete breast enhancement, giving patients a fuller feminine curve.

If you are interested in the breast lift procedure, a complimentary consultation with Dr. MacKenzie at our Santa Barbara office will give you a better understanding of the surgery and what you can expect. Dr. Mackenzie will discuss your cosmetic goals and you will be informed of the steps necessary to meet those goals.

The breast lift procedure requires general anesthetic and the procedure takes about an hour and a half. Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is moved higher. Dr. MacKenzie customizes the incisions to leave you with minimal scarring. The nipples and the remaining breast tissue are positioned higher on the chest, giving the breasts a more youthful and firm appearance. Breast implants often compliment a lift by restoring firmness and volume.

Normal side effects of breast lift surgery include pain, soreness, swelling, bruising, and general fatigue. However, all of these symptoms will fade with time, and patients can begin to enjoy their new, youthful curves.

Breast Reduction

The breast reduction procedure offered by our Santa Barbara plastic surgeon removes breast tissue and skin, decreasing the size of the breast. In addition to being an issue of self-consciousness, large breasts can also be a medical concern. Women with very large breasts can experience discomfort associated with shoulder, neck, and back pain, as well as skin irritation under the breast folds. Women with very large breasts do have an option, however. Breast reduction surgery can alleviate discomfort and other symptoms associated with large breasts. If you are tired of the discomfort associated with large breasts, you should consider breast reduction as a permanent and straightforward solution.

Prior to breast reduction surgery, you will have a complimentary consultation at our Santa Barbara office. In consultation, Dr. Mackenzie will discuss your breast reduction surgery goals, as well as procedural and other concerns you may have. Before any procedure can be performed, the surgeon must fully understand your concerns and goals, and you should come to a complete understanding of all aspects of the surgery.

The surgery itself requires the breast reduction patient to undergo general anesthesia, and it will take about three hours at one of our Santa Barbara surgical facilities. First, an incision is made around the areola and down to the breast crease, following the natural breast curvature. Then, Dr. MacKenzie removes tissue and skin so that the breast will be the desired size and then closes the incision with multiple layers of sutures.

Following surgery, breast reduction patients will experience some pain, as well as swelling and bruising in the breast area. However, these will disappear in a matter of weeks, and new contours will emerge.

The majority of breast reduction patients experience drastic improvement in their quality of life after breast reduction surgery. They enjoy increased self-confidence and a more comfortable lifestyle, free of shoulder, back and neck pain.

Breast Reconstruction

For women who have breast cancer, mastectomy surgery is a frightening option. Faced with the choice of losing one or both breasts, women are often hesitant, afraid that they will be unwomanly after surgery. However, cosmetic concerns should never interfere with a choice that should be based on health alone. Breast reconstruction surgery can eliminate these cosmetic concerns by providing women with curves and natural-looking breasts after mastectomy. Advanced breast reconstruction techniques enable women to have natural looking breasts after mastectomy surgery and allow them to have complete confidence in their appearance.

The breast reconstruction procedure requires a series of staged surgeries that can take up to a year. Patients have two options for breast reconstruction – implant reconstruction and flap reconstruction. In implant reconstruction, a synthetic implant is placed under the pectoral muscles, forming the breast mound. In flap reconstruction, the surgeon moves skin or tissue from one area of the body, usually the abdomen or back to the breast in order to form the breast mound. In a later surgery, the plastic surgeon can create the areola and nipple, completing the breast reconstruction procedure.
